"I Remember the Kitchen, Not the Sentence," Says Gloria Tiedemann of Hamburg

Years after one twelve-word comment made her a name in Hamburg, Gloria Tiedemann finds the thread beneath it has become a place where strangers keep house.

Gloria Tiedemann orders tea in a café in Altona and puts her phone face down beside the sugar. Under her sentence there are 212,000 replies.

"I was in the kitchen," she says. "The radiator was ticking. I typed it with one thumb."

The sentence is twelve words long: My uncle also had a boat and it also did not float. Nobody in the thread remembers what it was a reply to.

People now post recipes there, and birthdays. A man in Lisbon reports weekly on his tomato plant. Someone has written good morning under it every day for six years.

Gloria has never answered. "It seems rude now," she says. Then she turns the phone over and types it.
